چکیده

OBJECTIVE Echolucent carotid plaques are associated with acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (ACCEs) in atherosclerotic patients. The aim of this study was to develop a computer-aided method for identifying echolucent plaques. METHODS A total of 315 ultrasound images of carotid plaques (105 echo-rich, 105 intermediate and 105 echolucent) collected from 153 patients were included in this study. A bimodal gamma distribution was proposed to model the pixel statistics in the gray scale images of plaques. The discrete Fréchet distance features (DFDFs) of each plaque were extracted based on the statistical model. The most discriminative features (MDFs) were obtained from DFDFs by linear discriminant analysis, and a k-nearestneighbor classifier was implemented for classification of different types of plaques. RESULTS The classification accuracy of the three types of plaques using MDFs can reach 77.46%. When a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was produced to identify echolucent plaques, the area under the curve was 0.831. CONCLUSION Our results indicate potential feasibility of the method for identifying echolucent plaques based on DFDFs. SIGNIFICANCE Our method may potentially improve the ability of noninvasive ultrasonic examination in risk prediction of ACCEs for patients with plaques.

Texture analysis of ultrasonic images of symptomatic carotid plaques can identify those plaques associated with ipsilateral embolic brain infarction.

OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to determine the association between objective, computerised texture analysis of carotid plaque ultrasonic images and embolic CT-brain infarction in patients presenting with hemispheric neurological symptoms. DESIGN Cross-sectional study in patients with 50%-99% (ECST) carotid stenosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Carotid plaque ultrasonic images (n=54, 26 with ...

Ultrasonic echolucent carotid plaques predict future strokes.

BACKGROUND We tested prospectively the hypothesis that stroke development can be predicted by echolucency of carotid atherosclerotic plaques in previously symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. METHODS AND RESULTS We followed incidence of ipsilateral ischemic strokes for 4.4 years in 111 asymptomatic and 135 symptomatic patients with >/=50% relevant carotid artery stenosis. At inclusion, echo...

18FDG PET and ultrasound echolucency in carotid artery plaques.

OBJECTIVES The objective was to evaluate inflammation in echolucent carotid artery plaques. BACKGROUND Ultrasound echolucency of carotid artery plaques has been proven to differentiate patients at high risk of stroke. On the other hand, positron emission tomography (PET) of plaques with the use of [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) identifies highly inflamed plaques, and the combination of mole...

Echolucent carotid plaques predict future coronary events in patients with coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to examine whether echolucent carotid plaques predict future coronary events in patients with clinically stable coronary artery disease (CAD). BACKGROUND Although rupture of coronary plaques is considered a major cause of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), the clinical estimation of coronary vulnerability still remains inconclusive. Ultrasound evaluation ...

Echogenic carotid plaques are associated with aortic arterial stiffness in subjects with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis.

A better understanding of the interrelationships between the structure and function of the large arteries would lead to optimize cardiovascular disease prevention strategies. In this study, we investigated the relationships of aortic arterial stiffness assessed by carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (PWV), with carotid plaque echogenicity assessed by B-mode ultrasound. We analyzed 561 subjects ...
